Life without Manning: Even worse than the Colts imagined

The Indianapolis Colts knew they had an uphill climb ahead of them when they went into their season opener against the Houston Texans with Kerry Collins under center rather than Peyton Manning, but they probably didn’t know it would go this poorly. The Texans shut out the Colts in the first half, and the only score in the second half was a late touchdown from Collins to Reggie Wayne, long after the game was already decided.

The issue for the Colts, of course, is that having Peyton Manning leading your offense masks a number of other problems, but one has to wonder if the biggest issue for the Colts this season will be their porous defense. Kerry Collins should be able to generate a decent amount of offense with the weapons that he has around him (though the running game is certainly a cause for concern as well), but he won’t be able to win shootouts every week if the Colts can’t stop anybody.

Yeah, this Colts season could get ugly fast. Here's what we learned while watching the Texans race out to a 34-0 halftime lead against the Colts on their way to a 34-7 win.
