Cliff Corcoran: NL, AL MVP awards still undecided as season enters final week

The MLB Awards races are winding to a close with three games left in the regular season, and only a few have had slam dunk candidates emerge. Both of the Cy Young races appear to be over, with both Clayton Kershaw and Justin Verlander on the verge of winning the pitching Triple Crowns in each league (Kershaw’s is all but assured, while Verlander could still lose the ERA title to Jered Weaver).

The MVP races, however, are far less clear-cut. Verlander is still a popular MVP candidate, but the stellar play of Red Sox centerfielder Jacoby Ellsbury down the stretch — including his 14th-inning three-run homer on Sunday night to beat the Yankees — has vaulted him to the top of many ballots. But Jose Bautista, Miguel Cabrera, and Curtis Granderson are all going to be drawing attention as well.

In the National League, the MVP will come down to a two-man race between Ryan Braun and Matt Kemp. Both have put up remarkably similar numbers on the season, but Braun is playing for a team that’s going to the playoffs while Kemp is not, which could be the determining factor in the eyes of voters.

Meanwhile, the Rookie of the Year awards appear to be pretty well in hand for the Braves’ Craig Kimbrel and the Rays’ Jeremy Hellickson.

Neither the NL nor AL MVP awards have a clear front-runner with just three days remaining in the season. Cliff Corcoran examines which players have the late leads for the hardware.
