Skins' Hightower out for season; Moss 5-7 weeks

The news keeps getting worse for the Washington Redskins. After dropping their second straight game on Sunday, falling to 3-3 on the season and into third place in the NFC East, the Skins learned on Monday that they’ll also have to go the rest of the season without number one running back in Tim Hightower, and without number one wideout Santana Moss for the next 5-7 weeks. Hightower went down in the third quarter of yesterday’s loss to the Carolina Panthers, and the team confirmed today that the tore the ACL in his left knee, ending his first season in Washington after just 6 games. Meanwhile, Moss underwent surgery on his left hand after breaking it in the first half against Carolina.

Hightower was leading the Redskins in both carries and yards after coming over from the Arizona Cardinals in a trade this offseason, while Moss has led the team in receiving yards every year since joining the team in 2005.

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — From healthy, first-place surprise to battered and struggling, the Washington Redskins had their fortunes take another dive Monday when running back Tim Hightower was declared out for the season with a torn knee ligament and receiver Santana Moss underwent hand surgery that is expected to sideline him for 5-7 weeks.
