Why the Eagles will beat the Cowboys

The rivalry game in Philadelphia this Sunday night between the Eagles and Dallas Cowboys has been the talk of the town all week, particularly since the Eagles seem to have righted the ship after last week’s win over Washington. The win ended a four-game losing streak, but they will have their work cut out for them this weekend when they take on a far tougher opponent in the Dallas Cowboys.

Despite the Eagles’ problems stopping the run this year (they’re allowing 4.8 yards per carry, ranked 27th in the league), and Dallas running back DeMarco Murray coming off of a franchise record-setting performance against the St. Louis Rams, Adam Schein of Fox Sports believes that the Eagles have the personnel to slow down the Dallas running attack. In addition, the Eagles’ cornerback trio of Nnamdi Asomugha, Asante Samuel, and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie should be able to contain the dynamic Dallas receiving duo of Miles Austin and Dez Bryant, and maybe bait Tony Romo into throwing some interceptions.

The key for the Eagles’ defense, however, will be finding a way to shut down Jason Witten. The Dallas tight end is arguably the most potent receiving threat in the league at his position, and the Eagles do not have anyone on their linebacking corps or at safety who can cover him one-on-one. That means that they’ll have to be playing a lot of zone coverages in order to contain Witten.
