Detroit Tigers' ace Justin Verlander savors Cy Young

To the surprise of no one, Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Justin Verlander- was the unanimous choice for the American League Cy Young Award on Tuesday, collecting all 32 first-place votes. Verlander won the pitching Triple Crown this season, leading the AL with 24 wins, a 2.40 ERA, and 250 strikeouts in 251 innings pitched. The Cy Young Award was really never in doubt, so now the question becomes whether or not Verlander will have enough support to win the AL MVP as well. No pitcher has won a league MVP since Dennis Eckersley did so with the Oakland Athletics in 1992, and no starting pitcher has won one since Roger Clemens in 1986.

The AL MVP winner will be announced on Monday, November 21.

“I’ve got the Cy Young now. It’s an amazing experience.”
