Struggling Eric Staal hopes move to wing ends scoring slump

Through the first 18 games of the season, Carolina Hurricanes center Eric Staal has endured the worst start of his career, tallying just four goals and 4 assists and posting a -17. Some have speculated that it’s due to the distraction of his brother Marc Staal being sidelined with a concussion as the result of a hit from Eric last February, but whatever the reason, head coach Paul Maurice has decided that it’s time for a change. So when the Hurricanes take on the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night, Staal will shift from center to wing.

The move, in addition to just providing a change of pace, will likely serve to simplify Staal’s game, as he will have less of a responsibility to play defense and set up his teammates, allowing him to focus on putting the puck in the net.
