Pronger to miss a month following knee surgery

Philadelphia Flyers captain Chris Pronger sat out the team’s last four games with what they described as an “illness,” but apparently it was a lot more than that. The Flyers announced on Monday that the 37-year old defenseman will be undergoing knee surgery to clean out loose particles that have been bothering him for some time now. The procedure will occur on Tuesday of this week and will sideline Pronger for about a month, putting his status for the NHL Winter Classic on New Year’s Day in jeopardy.

A former league MVP, Pronger signed a 7-year, $35 million contract with the Flyers in 2009 after coming over in a trade with Anaheim. He played all 82 for them in his first season as he helped them reach the Stanley Cup Finals, but missed 32 regular season games and 8 playoff games last season with various injuries, and has played in just 13 out of the team’s 23 games this season. If Pronger’s injury keeps him out of action permanently then the Flyers could be in salary cap trouble, as the fact that the deal kicked in after he turned 35 means that if he is forced to retire before the contract expires when he’s 42, the Flyers will be on the hook for his full salary against the cap.

Flyers captain hurt, again.
