The Philadelphia Phillies have made it known that they will be focusing on the shortstop position almost exclusively at the Winter Meetings next week, but apparently that that focus is not going to have too much to do with Jose Reyes. Retaining Jimmy Rollins is still the Phillies top choice, but given the gap in the shortstop market between he and Reyes and then everyone else, there’s a good chance that a mini-bidding war could ensue when Rollins starts fielding offers.
But if he goes elsewhere, the Phils will likely turn to a cheap veteran option like Rafael Furcal or Edgar Renteria rather than pony up big years and dollars for Reyes. Speculation that they might be after him arose earlier this week when Reyes was spotted at a Philadelphia restaurant, but the trip reportedly had nothing to do with baseball, and Phils GM Ruben Amaro told Jayson Start of ESPN flat-out that Reyes was not a priority. Obviously that could change if it turns out that they can’t retain Rollins, but with Reyes expected to be courted by several teams next week, the Phils are clearly not putting eggs in his basket.
