According to Ian Casselberry of MLive.com, Jose Reyes signing with the Miami Marlins could be a positive for the Detroit Tigers, as it opens the door for them to get a leg up in the bidding for Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. The Marlins had been the favorites to land the 26-year old Despedes after he defected this past summer due to Miami’s proximity to his homeland and strong Cuban culture, but the $17+ million salary for Reyes means that the Marlins are likely going to have to spend their remaining funds for 2012 on pitching rather than offense.
After he establishes his residency in the Dominican Republic, Cespedes will be declared a free agent. And with his raw power and 6-0, 215 lb. physique that have drawn comparisons to former All-Star outfielder Raul Mondesi, some have already speculated that he will get a contract in the neighborhood of $50 million despite never having played a game against Major League pitching.
