The Pistons have formally cut ties shooting guard Richard Hamilton. The team chose not to use their Amnesty clause on Hamilton, but rather to orchestrate a buyout. The Pistons will probably rely on rookie guard Brandon Knight to provide scoring off the bench, and it could give them the needed incentive to offer long-term deal to Rodney Stuckey. To date Stuckey has not been offered a contract by any other teams, and is sitting with a qualifying offer of just over $3.8 million. As of now Ben Gordon will probably take over as the team’s starting shooting guard, with Brandon Knight and Will Bynum battling for minutes at the point if Stuckey departs.
Hamilton was a pivotal part of the Pistons title run in 2004, and their conference titles in 2004 and 2005. Most likely he find suitors in Chicago, Boston, or perhaps New Jersey, where his career average of 17.1 ppg would be an upgrade to their back court.
