Report: Braun result triggered by medication

The news of NL MVP Ryan Braun’s failed steroid test shocked most people around baseball when it was leaked two weeks ago, but the statement from his representatives at the time that there were “highly unusual circumstances” that led to the failed test was greeted by the customary eye roll from most fans given its similarity to almost all other explanations for failed PED tests around sports. However, a report from TMZ suggests that there actually is a reasonable explanation this time, as Braun was allegedly on medication for an unrelated issue that boosted his testosterone levels and thus triggered the positive result.

Braun is currently appealing the mandatory 50-game suspension that will begin at the start of next season, but even if it’s proven that he was on this medication and not a banned substance, it does not necessarily mean that he’ll have the ban overturned. The policy for Major League Baseball is that players are responsible for what they put into their bodies, and so ignorance about the effects of a medication is usually not a viable excuse. Moreover, medications that boost one’s testosterone can also be used as a masking agent, another substance that the raised levels can be attributed to while a player takes other PEDs, thus giving him deniability.

So even though Braun may in fact be innocent of taking a banned substance, he can still expect to serve out his suspension next season.

The website TMZ.com cited “sources directly connected with Major League Baseball” in reporting on Monday that Ryan Braun’s positive test under Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Policy was triggered by medication for a private medical issue.
