Spagnuolo could return to Philadelphia as defensive coordinator

According to a report in the San Diego Tribune (via PFT), the St. Louis Rams will fire head coach Steve Spagnuolo at the end of the season, clearing the way for him to return to the Philadelphia Eagles, the franchise where he started his NFL coaching career as a defensive assistant back in 1999. However, Dan Graziano of ESPN is also reporting that the rumor about an Eagles reunion, while it makes sense, is just speculation at this point.

The fact is that Andy Reid will likely keep his job, and will probably do what he can to save the job of current DC Juan Castillo, a converted offensive line coach who has failed to get much out of the Eagles defense in his first season as coordinator. So it’s not even a guarantee that the Eagles will have an opening, and if they do, they can expect quite a bit of competition for Spagnuolo’s services.

Spagnuaolo rose to NFL prominence as the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants in 2007 and 2008, the architect of the defense that shut down the undefeated Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. He left the Giants after the following season to take the head coaching job in St. Louis, but in three seasons has compiled just a 10-38 record. If and when he is dismissed by the Rams, a defensive coordinator position seems to be the most likely job for Spags, but the Giants could be just as interested as the Eagles, as few people expect Perry Fewell to remain with the team after this season.
