Could the New York Jets set up an intriguing quarterback competition involving division rivals Mark Sanchez and Chad Henne? That theory already is gaining steam after former Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano was officially named offensive coordinator of the Jets on Wednesday.

The pieces are now in place for the New York Jets to possibly make a move for Miami Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne. For starters, the news out of New York on Tuesday did not paint a pretty picture for “Mark Sanchez’s”: future with the team. First his mentor, offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, was replaced by former Dolphins coach Tony Sparano. Then the word came out that Sanchez’s teammates were not happy with his work ethic this past season, going so far as to call him “lazy” and suggesting that he needs someone to push him to get better and prevent complacency.
On top of that, the Dolphins do not view Henne as a long-term solution under center, and could decide to address that need with their 9th overall pick in April’s NFL Draft, or even make a play for Peyton Manning or another soon-to-be-available quarterback. Either way, as a free agent heading into the offseason, Henne’s tenure in Miami is likely over. But one person who did believe in his ability was Sparano, as he frequently and vociferously supported his quarterback all through 2010 and again in 2011 until Henne was lost for the season in October.
All the pieces seem to fit, as Henne would give the Jets a person to enter into a legitimate competition for the #1 job, and either he or Sanchez would provide a very capable presence as a backup if the starter ends up going down due to injury or ineffectiveness.
