Giants-Niners Rematch Just What Giants Wanted

The New York Giants lost a tight 27-20 game to the San Francisco 49ers in Candlestick Park back in Week 10, one in which they came very close to tying up in the final minutes until Eli Manning’s 4th down pass from the San Francisco 10-yard line was batted down at the line of scrimmage. It’s a loss that has stuck in the Giants’ craw ever since, viewing it as a game that got away and desperately wanting another chance to prove that they can beat the 13-3 49ers.

On top of that, San Francisco’s thrilling win over the Saints in the Divisional Round game means that the Giants will not have to try to knock off the Saints on their home field of the Superdome, where they were a perfect 8-0 during the regular season. Instead they’ll get to face Alex Smith, who deserves a ton of credit for turning his career around this season, but hardly strikes fear into his opponents the way that Drew Brees does. And of course, this is hardly the same Giants team that showed up to Candlestick in November. The defense, which was one of the worst in the league in the regular season, is playing its best football of the year, following up a shutout of the Atlanta offense with performance that stifled de facto MVP Aaron Rodgers and company on Sunday night in Green Bay.

One thing that New York will likely have trouble doing against San Francisco, however, is establishing the run. The 49ers had the best run defense in the NFL by far this season with 77.3 yards allowed per game (Baltimore was second at 92.6), while the Giants had the worst rushing attack in the league. And though Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw have been better in the postseason, they still did not gain any significant yardage against Green Bay until the final minutes of the game.

Getting to the NFC Championship game has already been an accomplishment for the Giants. But our Giants.com friend Mike Eisen tells us that beating the 49ers in a rematch of their Oct. 13 loss at Candlestick Park would make winning that much more satisfying.
