Mike Pelfrey among four Mets to avoid arbitration

The New York Mets avoided arbitration on Tuesday with four of the players who were eligible for it in 2012, the most notable of which is right-handed starter Mike Pelfrey. After making $3.925 million in 2011, Pelfrey only received a slight raise up to $5.675m for this coming campaign. Still, any raise at all for a pitcher who had as disappointing a season as he did last year should be considered a win.

After winning a team-high 15 games in 2010, Pelfrey went just 7-13 on the mound last season and saw his ERA jump more than a full run from 3.66 to 4.74. In addition, he struggled with the mental lapses that had plagued him in his previous seasons, often losing focus and command of his pitches. Pelfrey will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2012 season, so this should really be viewed as a make-or-break year for him in New York.

The Mets were able to take care of deals with all four of their arbitration-eligible players on Tuesday, inking Mike Pelfrey, Andres Torres, Ramon Ramirez and Manny Acosta each to one-year deals.
