The New York Rangers got some good news and bad news on their defensive corps on Monday. Second-year pro Ryan McDonagh was back skating with the team at practice, apparently having suffered no significant injury on the brutal hit that he took from Boston’s Andrew Ference on Saturday afternoon, a hit for which Ference received a three-game suspension.
The bad news came, however, when fellow defenseman Michael Sauer suffered a setback in his recovery from a concussion. Sauer has been out ever since being on the receiving end of a vicious (but clean) hit from Dion Phaneuf in a game against the Maple Leafs on December 5. He had been skating at the team’s practice facility last week, but started feeling an increase in symptoms and was subsequently shut down by trainer Jim Ramsay.
