Another Patriots Dynasty Hinges on Tom Brady

On February 5, the New England Patriots will take the field and look to win their 4th Super Bowl since 2002. Regardless of that game’s outcome, there are a myriad of reasons to think that the Patriots are poised to build another dynasty in the near future.

Quarterback Tom Brady, despite being 34, had one of his best seasons in 2011, throwing for over 5,000 yards, posting the NFL’s second highest quarterback rating of 105.6, and leading the Patriots to the number one seed in the AFC. In a league where having a great tight end is critical to success, the Patriots have two of the NFL’s best in Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez

The Pats also have the tremendous advantage of having one of the only elite quarterback’s in the AFC. Statistically speaking, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger ranks a distant second to Brady, excluding the injured Peyton Manning.

New England also has the resources to improve their roster going into next season. They have two first round picks, two second round picks, and $20 million in free cap space. Given all these elements, it is likely that the New England Patriots will reign supreme over the NFL in the coming seasons.

On the other hand, any hope of another dynasty lies squarely on the right arm of Brady, and should he win his fourth title at the age of 34, the question then becomes how long he will want to hang on. There’s no doubt that he’s capable of putting up at least a few more Hall of Fame caliber seasons, but not many quarterbacks retain that kind of effectiveness once they reach their mid-30s. After compiling as great of a resume as any quarterback of any era, plus all of the post-career opportunities that will be available to him, who’s to say that he won’t want to get out before his body really starts to break down?

John Axelrod

The New England Patriots are favored to win their first Super Bowl since the end of the 2004 season. That capped a run of three championships in four years, which happened to be the most recent NFL dynasty.
