Rangers to meet with Oswalt on Monday

Knowing that replacing C.J. Wilson in their starting rotation with Yu Darvish is hardly a fool-proof plan, the Texas Rangers are still looking to add another proven starter or two to help them get back to the World Series. And in doing so, they may have found a perfect fit with Roy Oswalt. After spending the first decade of his career in Texas with the Houston Astros, Oswalt pitched in Philadelphia for the past year and a half, but the word around him was that he was always interested in eventually heading back to Texas to be closer to his family.

He’s definitely not heading back to the Phillies after they “declined to offer him arbitration”: earlier in the offseason, so it would make a world of sense for him to sign with Texas. Besides being a trip home, it would give Oswalt, 34, a chance to pitch for a championship contender in a league where most hitters have never seen him. Obviously his back problems are a concern, but if the Rangers were to offer him a one-year deal with a vesting option for a second at around $10-12 million per year, it would likely be enough to get a contract signed.

The Rangers are planning to meet with free-agent pitcher Roy Oswalt and his agent, Bob Garber, on Monday, according to sources.
