Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard breaks finger

Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard, in the midst of the finest season of his career and coming off of his first ever All-Star appearance, suffered a broken finger on his right hand (his blocker/stick hand) in the Wings’ 4-3 shootout win over the Nashville Predators on Thursday night. The severity of the break will be reevaluated after the weekend when Detroit returns home from their current road trip, but it’s safe to say at this point that Howard will not be playing in the team’s next two games on the trip.

Ty Conklin will get the starts in Howard’s absence and Joey MacDonald was recalled from Grand Rapids of the AHL to serve as his backup. Given Conklin’s struggles this season (3.20 GAA, .886 SV%), it’s entirely possible that MacDonald could get a start soon if Howard is out for more than just two games.

Joey MacDonald has been recalled from the Grand Rapids Griffins to serve as Ty Conklin’s backup.
