The NBA is a star-driven league, and usually teams don’t put much attention into assembling a solid second unit. The teams that win in the playoffs are the teams with the most talent, not the most depth. But in this condensed season, where teams regularly play three games in three nights, benches are playing a much more pivotal role. This year the type of production a team gets out of its reserves could determine who makes it into the playoffs. Here’s a look at the NBA’s best benches…
5. The Milwaukee Bucks currently hold the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference, and will likely be fighting for their playoff lives all season, but their solid second unit will be key as the season wears on. Players like Mike Dunleavy, Shaun Livingston, and Drew Gooden are giving the Bucks solid production off the bench. Currently Milwaukee’s bench is tied for second in the NBA in rebounding and is tenth in scoring.
4. Even with the injury to the league’s best sixth man, Manu Ginobili, the Spurs still have one of the league’s best benches. Despite their aging starting rotation, they are still in fourth place in the western conference. Tiago Splitter is averaging over 9 points and 5 rebounds a game, and Kawhi Leonard is doing a solid job in place of Ginobili.
3. One of the reasons the Philadelphia 76ers are tied for second in the Eastern Conference is because they have some great players coming of the bench. Lou Williams is leading the team in scoring and is a legitimate 6th Man of the Year candidate. Young players Evan Turner and Thaddeus Young also provide great energy off the bench and are a key reason why the 76ers have the third highest scoring second unit.
2. The Dallas Mavericks lead the NBA in points from their bench. They have the ideal pure shooting sixth man in Jason Terry, who continually comes up big in close games. Roddy Beaubois and Ian Mahinmi have emerged as great backups this season, and Lamar Odom and Vince Carter are two experienced veterans who have plenty of experience in critical situations.
1 The best bench in the NBA this season belongs to the Denver Nuggets. They lead the league in steals, rebounds, and assists off the bench, and are just behind Dallas in scoring. Andre Miller and Al Harrington have been outstanding and are both averaging double figures in scoring off the bench.
