Best and worst of free agent signings for 2011

With two of the biggest contracts in baseball history handed out during the 2011-12 baseball offseason, there was plenty of things to talk about regarding smart deals and bad deals. Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder both received monster contracts nearly a decade long and worth over $200 million, and closer Jonathon Papelbon got the biggest deal ever awarded to a closer when he signed for four years and $50 million with the Phillies. Meanwhile, the Miami Marlins went nuts by handing out big deals to Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle, and Heath Bell. Of those three, Reyes’ contract is certainly the most risky given its size and his injury history, but could also have a huge payoff.

The most interesting contract of the offeseason, however, probably belongs to the Texas Rangers and Japanese phenom Yu Darvish. After paying a record posting fee of nearly $52 million, the Rangers gave him a 6-year, $60 million deal, meaning that they spent more money for him than the Red Sox spent on Daisuke Matsuzaka back in 2007.

So which ones qualify as the biggest risks of the offseason? Check out the Chicago Tribune‘s breakdown of the best and worst contracts for their picks for each position.
