RED SOX WILL GO OUT FOR HIM.

He may be getting a ton of blame (most of it undeserved) for allowing a crucial pass to fall to the ground in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl, but that’s not going to change Wes Welker’s standing with the New England Patriots. Tom Brady’s favorite target, who led the NFL in catches for the third time in his five seasons as a Patriot in 2011, is due to hit free agency, but likely will never get there. The Pats are expected to use their franchise tag on Welker, ensuring him a one-year, guaranteed deal for a salary equivalent to the average of the five highest paid NFL receivers.
At just 30 years old, Welker should have plenty of years left in him, which means that the Pats will likely try to work out a long-term extension for him down the road. But by franchising him, they guarantee that he’ll be back next season in the event that negotiations for a longer deal fall through.
