Trade for Kubina means Flyers are likely done dealing

The Philadelphia Flyers have been rumored to be after a top-pairing defenseman ever since Chris Pronger was lost for the season, with names ranging from Shea Weber to Ryan Suter to Luke Schenn to Tim Gleason. But with none of those looking likely (Nashville is too competitive to trade Weber or Suter, Schenn would cost too much, and Gleason just signed an extension with Carolina), they went off the script and dealt 2nd and 4th round picks plus minor league forward Joe Kalinski for Tampa Bay defenseman Pavel Kubina.

While not a prototypical top pairing guy, Kubina still gives the Flyers a big body that they can put in front of the net (6’4” 258 lbs), and he also has a big shot that will bring an added dimension to their power play. He also is a right-handed shot, something that they have been missing on their blue line all season.

And though he’s not the stud like Weber or Suter, or young like Schenn (Kubina will turn 35 in April), he is likely as good of an acquisition that the Flyers were going to be able to make, and comes at a relatively low price. However, with the trade complete, it likely means the end of deals for Philly. They still possess a potent offense, and managed to beef up their back line a decent amount with Kubina and the trade for bottom pairing defenseman Nick Grossman on Thursday, all without depleting their NHL roster.

Newly acquired defenseman Pavel Kubina gives the Flyers some beef – he stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 258 pounds – and brings the team something that has been missing since Chris Pronger was sidelined in November with a concussion: nastiness.
