Ray Rice looking for Peterson-like payday

Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice is heading into his first free agency year, and while the team will certainly use the franchise tag on him to prevent him from hitting the open market, a long-term deal is likely coming down the road. Since becoming a full-time starter in 2009, his second year in the league, Rice has averaged 1,961 yards from scrimmage per season, including a league-leading 2068 this past year.

That kind of production has Rice expecting a long-term deal similar to the kind that Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson signed before the 2011 season, a 7-year, $100 million contract that included $36 million in guaranteed money. Though Rice doesn’t have Peterson’s size, his running style and pass catching ability makes him even more conducive to sustained health, so getting that type of contract shouldn’t be too difficult.
