Tampa Bay, Colorado, and Detroit pull off three-team trade

The NHL trade deadline may be more bluster than actual results this season, but it’s always fun to see a three-team deal pulled off. The Tampa Bay Lightning continued their fire-sale on Tuesday when they shipped winger Steve Downie to Colorado in exchange for defenseman Kyle Quincey, and then flipped Quincey to the Detroit Red Wings for a first-round pick.

While a first-round pick seems like a lot for Detroit to pay for a mid-pairing defenseman like Quincey, it’s worth considering that the pick will likely be the last or next-to-last in the first round. And even if it wasn’t, this deal makes the Red Wings better this year without detracting from their current roster. Quincey is a versatile, puck-moving defenseman who can play over 20 minutes a night on both the power play and penalty kill, and is merely a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

What makes this trade so interesting is that Quincey was originally drafted by the Wings in 2003 and then cut in 2008, yet GM Ken Holland just traded away a first-round draft choice for him. And of course, the fact that Steve Yzerman just managed to swap Steve Downie for a first round pick.

On our ranking of defensemen who could make an impact at the 2012 NHL trade deadline, Pavel Kubina was listed at No. 3; the Tampa Bay Lightning traded him to the Philadelphia Flyers over the weekend.
