Howard's eye set on Brooklyn?

As the Dwight Howard watch continues, SI.com’s Sam Amick writes that Howard has always been in a New York state of mind.

“Sources with knowledge of Howard’s thinking say nothing has changed about his outlook. And while his wish-list of teams still includes the Nets, Lakers and Mavs, New Jersey is far and away the leader… It’s not just about basketball for Howard. He wants to take his brand global, to leverage the international influence of Russian owner Mikhail Prokhorov while building his brand as Brooklyn’s first star. His wandering eye is enticed not only by the Barclays Center that is set to open next season, but the businesses in the booming area around it that could afford many off-court opportunities. He wants, as one source said, to ‘be Kobe Bryant, not be with Kobe Bryant.’ Of course, it’s hardly that simple.”

Howard could hold out until free agency to depart Orlando, however, it’s in his financial best interest to land with the Nets now. Under the new CBA, Max Contract guidelines were relatively unchanged except the raise per year. Howard would see a 7.5 percent raise to his max number (spread over five-years) opposed to the 4.5 (spread over four-years) that he would receive as free agent signee. The only problem is that New Jersey’s current list of assets isn’t exactly the most lucrative option Orlando could receive in Howard trade. For example, the Lakers could offer the Magic a far better package than New Jersey or even Dallas.

No doubt the Nets will have to sacrifice multiple first round picks along with probably Brook Lopez, Marshon Brooks, and perhaps Kris Humphries and Mehmet Okur’s expiring contracts. In return for Howard, New Jersey would also have to take back at least one if not two of Orlando’s bad contracts, namely Hedo Turkoglu and perhaps Chris Duhon.

This story is far from over, and there will no doubt be more twists and turns than a Dan Brown novel. Yet Orlando currently sits fifth in the Eastern Conference, have one of the best coaches in the NBA, and have played well thus far considering all the uncertainty around just who will be in town come March 15.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Will he stay, or will he go?
