You never know what you’re going to get on a particular day when you walk into a dressing room.
After watching Ilya Bryzgalov over the last several weeks, I feel he has gotten his act together since coming back from the flu. Yeah, he had a couple gaffes in giving up the first goal on the first shot, but his game seems to be getting better.
He exudes confidence.
There weren’t many playe…

As the most disappointing player acquisition to come through Philadelphia in several years — and that’s saying something — Ilya Bryzgalov hasn’t been the most team-focused player in the Flyers locker room. Bryzgalov has struggled to hold on to his number one job in the Philadelphia net en route to the worst statistical season of his career, but has shown signs of turning things around lately.
In his last three starts, Bryz has compiled a .951 save percentage and won his last two (the only loss coming in a 1-0 game against San Jose), including a 34-save shutout against the Capitals on Sunday. The hot streak comes following a meeting with some of the team leadership, including alternate captain Danny Briere, who believe that the goalie was too focused on his own individual struggles rather than the team as a whole. As such, Briere told the media that Bryzgalov has been a much better teammate ever since the meeting, and his numbers have not so coincidentally gone up as well.
Goalies are notoriously enigmatic, and there are few places — if any — that are tougher to play the position than Philadelphia. So it would seem to make perfect sense that Bryzgalov would get in his own head as he struggled to keep the puck out of the net over the course of the season. So by taking the focus off of himself and putting it on the team, it has the dual effect of making him think less while on the ice and simply going out and playing hockey.
