Papelbon sends a volley back at Red Sox Nation

Well that didn’t take long. Spring Training is just a few weeks old, and Jonathan Papelbon is already stoking the flames of the rivalry between the cities of Boston and Philadelphia. After signing with the Phillies this offseason with a 4-year, $50 million contract — making him the highest paid closer in baseball history — Papelbon gave a public criticism of his old Boston fanbase on Thursday in a radio interview with Philadelphia's 94-WIP:

“The difference between Boston and Philadelphia, the Boston fans are a little bit more hysterical when it comes to the game of baseball. The Philly fans tend to know the game a little better, being in the National League, you know, the way the game is played. I’ve had a guy take off his prosthetic leg and throw it in the bullpen in Boston.”

Of course, it’s worth noting that Papelbon made this statement without yet pitching in front of Philadelphia fans during an actual game. Perhaps we can check in with him again after he blows consecutive games this season. And if he thinks a prosthetic leg is bad, maybe he should ask his old teammate J.D. Drew about the best way to dodge D batteries.

Jonathan Papelbon has already endeared himself to Phillies fans without throwing a meaningful pitch.
