Most of the pieces of the Chicago White Sox’ new season under first-time manager Robin Ventura are in place as the team breaks camp, with one notable exception: the closer job. Sergio Santos had that job last season but was traded to Toronto this winter for prospect Nestor Molina, leaving the Sox with an open competition for the 2012 season.
The Sox have four different candidates for the job, and it’s unlikely that anyone who gets tabbed in the first save situation will have a strong hold on it if he doesn’t perform right away. Hector Santiago, Addison Reed, Matt Thornton, and Jesse Crain will likely all make the final 25-man roster after strong spring performances, and all could have a shot at the job throughout the year.
