After intentionally hitting Washington Nationals rookie Bryce Harper with a pitch on Sunday night, Cole Hamels was suspended five games by Major League Baseball. Hamels admitted after the game that the pitch was intentional, meaning he knew some sort of punishment was coming, but with Cliff Lee due to come off the disabled list on Wednesday, he won’t even have to be pushed back from his next scheduled start.
“I was trying to hit him,” Hamels said after the game. “I’m not going to deny it. I’m not trying to injure the guy. They’re probably not going to like me for it, but I’m not going to say I wasn’t trying to do it. I think they understood the message, and they threw it right back. That’s the way, and I respect it.”
The pitch drew the ire of Nationals GM Mike Rizzo, who called it a “gutless act” and that Hamels was a “fake tough guy” for throwing at the 19-year-old rookie.
