Mike Mularkey went on the record today saying Maurice Jones-Drew wants a contract extension.
Asked by Jones-Drew wasn’t here for organized team activities, which are voluntary, Mularkey said:
“He’s talked about trying to get an extension for his contract, which I think everybody’s aware of. I’m on the coaching end of those matters. I talk to him about football and what I can do for him on the field and in the locker room.”

Last season’s career-best performance by Maurice Jones-Drew in which he made his first All-Pro team and had a league-high 1606 yards on the ground could end up being an expensive one for the Jaguars. The Jags’ voluntary offseason workouts began this week with the Human Bowling Ball noticeably absent, and head coach Mike Mularkey confirmed on Tuesday that it’s due to his desire for a new deal.
Jones-Drew is due to earn $4.45M this season, and has two years left on a 5-year, $31M deal that he signed prior to the 2009 season, meaning that his only leverage in these negotiations is his willingness to hold out into the regular season, which would likely cause the Jaguars’ chances of competing in 2012 to drop from slim to none.
