Eagles trying to avoid hype in 2012

The majority of the talk last NFL offseason was about the high-spending moves made by the Philadelphia Eagles in anticipation of a Super Bowl run. But as is usually the case, the team that wins the offseason fell short during the actual season, and the “Dream Team” turned into a nightmare for the Philly faithful.

But with the progenitor of that moniker, Vince Young, now off in Buffalo, the Eagles are ready to begin a new season with significantly lower expectations and see if they can eclipse them. The defense has had another year to adapt to coordinator Juan Castillo’s Wide-9 system, the linebacking corps — a serious Achilles heel last year — has finally been addressed with the acquisition of DeMeco Ryans from Houston, and Michael Vick has taken it upon himself to ensure that this isn’t Andy Reid’s last season as head coach.

Unlike last offseason, the Eagles spent most of this past winter addressing real needs rather than gunning for the sexiest acquisitions available. Ryans was a perfect example, as was the signing of tackle Demetress Bell following the season-ending Achilles injury to All-Pro left tackle Jason Peters. They also signed franchise running back LeSean McCoy to a lengthy extension, and in a somewhat controversial move, did the same for wide receiver DeSean Jackson.

Playing in the same division as the reigning Super Bowl champion means that the Eagles are not going to be the consensus favorite this time around, and that’s something they’re just fine with.

The “Dream Team” label doomed the Eagles to mediocrity last season, but this year LeSean McCoy says they are hoping to put the nightmare of the “Dream Team” behind them.
