After a decade and more than 100 sacks as a 4-3 defensive end, Dwight Freeney is moving to outside linebacker in new coach Chuck Pagano's 3-4 defense. And he says that's a bigger adjustment than some people might realize.

With the hiring of Chuck Pagano as the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts comes the implementation of the 3-4 defense that he ran last year as the defensive coordinator in Baltimore. And in doing so, Dwight Freeney will be forced to move from his position as defensive end to outside linebacker. While Freeney’s primary job will still be to rush the passer, he will now be expected to drop into coverage more often, and perhaps most importantly, will be lining up without his hand on the ground for the first time in his career.
It’s a move that other Pro Bowl defensive ends have made before, most recently Mario Williams in his final year with the Texans, but often with mixed results. Unlike Williams, Freeney has more of the size of a linebacker than Williams, but he is also 32 years old, making his diminished speed more of a factor.
