While some thought thought that Vinny Del Negro’s tenure as the Clippers head coach would soon be coming to an end the Clippers announced today that they will be exercising his contract option for 2012-2013. Del Negro was on the hot seat for much of the second half of the season, and with viable candidates such as Stan Van Gundy, Nate McMillian, Jerry Sloan, and top rated assistants such as Patrick Ewing, and Golden States Mike Malone keeping Del Negro is somewhat of surprise. Sloan would have been an intriguing choice as he could have replicated the same offense he ran in Utah figuratively replacing Stockton with Chris Paul, and Karl Malone with Blake Griffin. Still, Del Negro lead the Clippers to the playoffs since 2006 and a combined record of 72-76 in two years as the Clips head coach.
