Penguins acquire Vokoun from Capitals

The emergence of Braden Holtby during the playoffs and his status as the likely number one netminder in Washington heading into next season gave the Capitals a glut of goalies, and so they’ve traded the rights to Tomas Vokoun to the Penguins in exchange for a seventh round pick. The Pens’ lack of a viable backup for Marc-Andre Fleury (Brent Johnson did not cut it) put them in a tough position while he was struggling in the postseason, and Vokoun should give Dan Bylsma some more options next time around.

Vokoun, who will turn 36 next month, was due to be a free agent on July 1 but signed a two-year deal worth $4 million following the trade.
