The Washington Nationals have been the biggest surprise of the young season, rocketing out to a 14-4 start in the first month. However, quietly the Nats have been playing under .500 baseball since, going 16-18 as they battle through a swath of injuries to key players like Jayson Werth. The Miami Marlins have crept up into a tie for 1st and the Mets (against all odds) are hanging around as well, at only a half game back.
The Nationals are barely halfway through their 32-game quest against both Eastern Divisions. Neither the AL or NL East contain a team under .500, and Washington has yet to play the red hot Mets, Yankees, and Rays. They’re 7-7 so far, but if the Nationals come out of this stretch on the wrong end they could find themselves in the basement. Ryan Zimmerman needs to stop stinking like Limburger Cheese, Bryce Harper has to keep up the momentum, and the vaunted Nationals pitching staff cannot falter.
If there was ever an important three weeks in June, this is it for the Nationals.
