In 13 starts so far this season, San Francisco Giants- ace Tim Lincecum has turned in just two quality starts, has an NL-leading seven losses, and an ERA of an even 6.00. And though the diminutive hurler has had slumps before in his career, it may be time for the two-time Cy Young winner to sit down for a while to see if rest can help cure whatever’s ailing him.
Cliff Corcoran of SI points out that while Lincecum is still striking hitters out at about the same pace as the last two years, his velocity has dropped by an average of two miles per hour this season, indicating that there might be a shoulder injury the likes of which was plaguing the Yankees’ “Michael Pineda”: earlier this season. Also worth noting is that though his strikeout rate has remained the same, his walk rate has increased dramatically over the past three seasons, from 2.7 BB/9 in his second Cy Young season of 2009 to 4.9 through June 11 of this year.
