Ogando goes on disabled list with groin strain

The once formidable Texas Rangers rotation just lost another piece on Tuesday, as Alexi Ogando is due to be out 4-6 weeks with a strained groin. Ogando suffered the injury legging out a bunt during an interleague game against the San Francisco Giants (queue designated hitter debate). Ogando’s absence until after the All-Star break leaves a gaping hole in the Texas rotation for the time being.

Although Roy Oswalt was recently brought in by the Rangers to add some pitching depth, Texas has recently stated that they are not going to rush him back from his brief inactivity (he’s due to start for Double-A Frisco on Tuesday night). Texas has yet to announce who is to take Ogando’s upcoming start, but it is likely to be either Robbie Ross or the recently brought up Michael Kirkman, both lefties. Kirkman had 15 appearances last season for the Rangers and is 3-0 with a 2.65 ERA in his last 17 Triple-A innings, while Ross is 6-0 with a 1.30 ERA in 34.2 innings out of the bullpen.

With Derek Holland, Neftali Feliz, and now Ogando on the DL, the Rangers are hoping to patch together a rotation good enough to keep them in front of the hard-charging Los Angeles Angels (7-3 in their last 10 games) until their rotation can regain its health.

The Rangers placed right-handed pitcher Alexi Ogando on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday, retroactive to Monday, with a right groin strain.
