Bruins drop over $16 million to sign Kelly, Campbell

Shortly after their season ended, the Boston Bruins stated that forward Chris Kelly was their first off season priority signing. Mission accomplished, as Kelly inked a 4-year, $12 million deal. The B’s also (predictably) are bringing back their center Gregory Campbell to a 3-year, $4.8 million contract. Boston has stated several times that they like the core of their team and wish to keep it intact.

Kelly and Campbell have been effective anchors to Boston’s third and fourth lines, respectively. In addition to being an assistant captain, Kelly also scored a career-high 20 goals while adding 19 assists in the 2011-12 season. Kelly is also very strong defensively and is used by Claude Julien in clutch situations and final shifts for his strong hockey sense, defensive responsibility, and face-off ability. Kelly was the only Bruins player to appear in all 82 regular season games.

In Campbell, the Bruins have a solid 4th line center who isn’t afraid to play the role of enforcer. Campbell scored 8 goals, had 8 assists, and won 50.7% of his faceoffs this past season.

Looks as though the 2012-13 Bruins will have a similar makeup to the 2011-12 team.
