Ballard claimed off waivers by New England

After waiving injured tight end Jake Ballard, who tore is ACL in the Super Bowl win over the New England Patriots, the Giants had planned on bringing him back on a restructured contract even though he won’t be ready for the start of the 2012 season — and he’s said that he likely won’t be able to play at all. But in a surprise move, the Patriots claimed the injured tight end off waivers on Tuesday afternoon in an apparent attempt to introduce the NFL’s first 5-tight end formation this season.

Jake Ballard returned to the Giants’ practice facility on Tuesday afternoon exactly 24 hours after he was waived/injured by the defending Super Bowl champs. But his visit to Giants minicamp turned out to be just that.
