Last year the Eagles’ “Dream Team” failed to reach expectations and QB Michael Vick’s performance sent him spiraling downward on “The Top 100: Players of 2012.” This year will be different.

Michael Vick has already taken it upon himself to keep Andy Reid employed in Philadelphia beyond this season, and it’s apparently not a promise that he made haphazardly. According to his head coach, Vick has thrown himself into a “crazy” offseason workout program and has taken on even more of a leadership role than before with this Eagles team.
Vick has done everything he can to distance himself from Philadelphia’s self-applied “Dream Team” moniker last year (it’s fitting that the progenitor of that name, Vince Young, is now in Buffalo), but the expectations of the Eagles’ offseason spending spree of a year ago have not gone away. After failing to make the playoffs in 2011, they are expected to be back among the Super Bowl contenders. In fact, they’re currently going off at 14-1 to win the title, the sixth shortest odds in the league and ahead of the defending champion Giants.
It all hinges once again, however, on Vick’s ability not only to assert his will from the quarterback position, but also to stay on the field. After missing three games with a broken rib last season, Vick has now played in only one 16-game game season (2006 with the Falcons) in his 9-year career. By dedicating himself even more during the offseason he might be able to lessen the chances that he gets hurt, but that will still be mitigated by his relatively slight frame and running style.
If he gets hurt again for any length of time, it will likely thwart the Eagles’ shot at making people forget about their disastrous 2011.
