Cain's perfect game much more than just latest pitching gem

Matt Cain didn’t just throw the first perfect game in Giants- history and the 5th no-hitter in the Majors this season on Wednesday night. He may have turned in the best game in baseball history.

By striking out 14 Astros on his way to perfection, Cain tied Sandy Koufax for the most Ks in a perfect game. And judging by Bill James’ “game score” metric, it was second only to Kerry Wood’s 20-strikeout performance (also against the Astros) in 1998 in terms of the most dominant pitching performances ever. And Wood’s game was “only” a one-hitter, giving Cain’s Wednesday night performance a lot of credence as the greatest in MLB’s storied history.

Matt Cain didn’t just throw a perfect game in the Giants’ 10-0 rout of the Astros. He turned in one of the most dominant nine-inning performances in history, as Cliff Corcoran explains.
