Reports have been swirling the past few weeks that Philadelphia Eagles QB Kevin Kolb would be traded, but the question was, to who?
We now may have our answer.
ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that there is a 100% chance that Kolb would be a Cardinal as soon as the league year begins. The return? Former first round selection of the Cardinals, CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.
In my previous article about Kolb and his current value, I mentioned that the Cardinals were a top landing spot for the signal caller, and that's what looks to be the case with this most recent report. The Cards are in desperate need for QB help, and they decided to not take a flyer on drafting a QB during the draft this past April.
This would be a major win-win for both clubs. The Cardinals drafted LSU CB Patrick Petersen with their first round selection, so they already have Rodgers-Cromartie's replacement. The Eagles, on the other hand, have Michael Vick at the helm, so they seem to be covered there barring injury. But the Eagles biggest weakness may be in the secondary. Asante Samuel is a lock for the #1 spot, but all spots after that on the depth chart are open. Rodgers-Cromartie would be a perfect fit as the #2 in Philadelphia, so it truly makes sense for both teams to pull the trigger.
The move could bite the Eagles in the "you know what" if Michael Vick sustains an injury. There were too many occasions last year where Vick was hit hard trying to scramble and make a play and the Eagles will be one play away from being out of contention in the NFC East. If they do indeed pull the trigger, they will be in the market for a veteran QB to come in as an insurance policy for their QB.
The Cardinals should have no problem parting with the CB, with rumors of the teams' displeasure with the former first round pick. There have been issues with his work ethic and attention to detail which has soured some of the coaching staff. The recommendation from Pro Bowl WR Larry Fitzgerald also has the Cardinals front office wanting to pull the trigger on this deal. Fitzgerald has been lobbying to get a quarterback to the desert and, according to numerous reports; Kolb was at the top of his wish list.
Time will tell if this deal does get done, but it makes too much sense for both teams to not find a way to make it happen.
