Jagr an intriguing option for several teams

After TSN’s Darren Dreger reported on Monday that Jaromir Jagr had declined to sign a contract extension with the Flyers and will test free agency on July 1, a number of interesting scenarios arose around the league. At 40 years old this past season, Jagr proved that he can still be an effective player when healthy, scoring 54 points in 73 games despite struggling at times with a hip flexor injury.

Plenty of teams have already arisen as potential destinations for the man who ranks 8th on the all-time scoring list, with the Flyers, Red Wings, Penguins, and even the Calgary Flames rumored as being interested in his services.

Jagr made $3.3 million last season with the Flyers on a one-year deal that he signed after many expected him to make a return to his old stomping grounds in Pittsburgh, but expressed frustration with his ice time after they were eliminated from the playoffs by the Devils. Should the open market not produce offers at the level he’s looking for, it’s not crazy to assume that a return to one of those Pennsylvania teams is still a possibility.

The Red Wings could also make a serious push for him to add some supplemental scoring, particularly if they miss out on signing Zach Parise. However, Detroit should be looking to get younger, not older after they were bounced in the first round by the youthful Nashville Predators, and signing a 40-year-old with hip problems doesn’t really fit that narrative.

As for the other team he has been linked to, the Calgary Flames, they are still several years away from competing and have a lengthy rebuilding process ahead of them. So despite having expressed admiration for the passion of the Canadian fans in the past as well as a willingness to sign with the other Alberta-based team (the Oilers) in 2008, a stint there doesn’t make a whole lot of sense either.

Detroit tried to sign him last summer, but he went for the money.
