Unrestricted free agent Chauncey Billups has been very busy this offseason. Aside from running his annual basketball camp in Denver, the 15-year veteran has also been rehabbing his torn Achilles tendon.
The five-time All-Star claims he will be able to move around at the camp and play with the kids. For teams looking to potentially pick up the former finals MVP, this is good news. If Billups’ career is to continue he must be signed this summer, and showing teams he has made progress with the injury will only increase his chances.
Billups seems to think he’ll be able to play. During a phone interview, the veteran point guard claimed he was progressing “far ahead of schedule” and “can’t complain at all” about his current situation. Opposed to the speculation that he would be out until January, Billups claims he will be “ready by training camp” and is “planning on playing all 82 games.”
Whether Billups is embellishing his situation to increase his value or really is making a miraculous recovery remains unknown. One thing is for sure however; he does not want to return to Denver. Although Billups was born, raised, attended college, and currently lives in Colorado, he is against returning to the team that traded him twice. As his words seemed nicer than his actual feelings, Billups sarcastically stated, “They traded me two times. Want me to give them a third opportunity?” He continued by acknowledging his success with the Nuggets, but when asked if he would return Billups simply stated, “I can’t see that.”
As a veteran whose career averages include 15.5 points, 5.5 assists, and a rank of 6th all-time in free throw percentage (.8937), Billups would be able to help a lot of teams. The former NBA champion did say he would consider going back to the Clippers, where he spent last season until his injury in February, but as a true free agent for the first time in 10 years, he wants to consider more options.
