Oswalt ready to resume career on his terms

Roy Oswalt’s free agent drama over the past 6 months led to plenty of speculation and more than a few interested parties. But after signing with the Texas Rangers last month, Oswalt has completed his stint in the minor league to get his arm strength back, and will make his 2012 season debut on Friday night against the Colorado Rockies.

In joining a first-place team that has won its past six games in the Rangers, Oswalt begins his season under little pressure to be the same pitcher that has compiled 159 career wins with a .321 ERA over 11 seasons with the Astros and Phillies. He was brilliant after being traded to Philadelphia at the deadline in 2010, going 7-1 with a 1.74 ERA in 13 second-half starts, but injuries limited him to just 23 games and 139 innings last year.

Now with Texas, he joins a team with an already strong rotation led by Colby Lewis, Matt Harrison, and Yu Darvish, and an powerful offense that has scored more runs (371) and hit for a higher average (.281) than any other team in baseball.

Here comes the midseason return of Roy Oswalt in circumstances of his own choosing; for the team he wants to pitch for, in a place not that far from his Mississippi home, at a time he found suitable, just after the summer solstice.
