Sources: Greinke may be on the move

As anticipated, the Milwaukee Brewers’ phone has been ringing about their former Cy Young winner Zack Greinke, and they’re willing to talk. The Brewers reportedly will be looking to move their ace at the deadline if they’re unable to extend him, as Greinke is due to be a free agent this upcoming offseason. And with many contenders desperately looking for a quality starter, the struggling Brewers might be better served trading him for some pieces. The consensus among executives is that the Brewers would rather deal Greinke for some immediate help instead of plunging back into a rebuilding state.

Because Greinke is due to be a free agent, he’s likely bound for a contender. The Texas Rangers and Washington Nationals are very interested Greinke, but don’t count out the likes of the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, and rotation-desperate Atlanta Braves (who have a good deal of young talent to use as trade bait).

Always a factor in dealing with Greinke, however, is the fact that he has a history of social anxiety disorder and depression and has stated his preference in the past to play in a smaller market.

The Milwaukee Brewers say they have not yet made a decision on whether to trade right-hander Zack Greinke or any other player.
