Sakic, Bure, Sundin, Oates to enter Hockey Hall of Fame

The Hockey Hall of Fame will induct four new players in November after the vote of the 18-member selection committee was revealed on Tuesday to include Joe Sakic, Pavel Bure, Mats Sundin, and newly-hired Capitals coach Adam Oates.

Both Sakic and Sundin were elected in their first year of eligibility, though only Sakic was considered to be a lock. The former Avalanche captain spent his entire 20-year career with the Quebec/Colorado organization, where he led the team to two Stanley Cup titles and racked up 1,641 career points (9th all time), winning a Hart Trophy and a Conn Smythe along the way.

Mats Sundin, who played with Sakic in Quebec for four years before being traded to Toronto and spending 13 years there, never won a Cup or an MVP, but scored 1,349 points in 1,346 NHL games and was the face of what was a sometimes-moribund Maple Leafs franchise.

Bure was one of the most electrifying goal scorers that the league has ever seen, notching 437 in 702 NHL games, but knee injuries cut his career short at just 31 years of age. He won the Calder Trophy in his rookie season and followed it up with back-to-back 60-goal seasons in Vancouver while leading the Canucks to the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals, before being traded to Florida in 1999. His career average of 0.62 goals per game is the fifth highest in NHL history.

Oates, meanwhile, capped a whirlwind day in which he was named head coach of the Washington Capitals (one of his former teams) before getting the call in the afternoon. Known as one of the greatest playmakers in league history, Oates ranks 6th all time with 1,079 assists over his 19 NHL seasons. He bounced around the league a lot during his career, making his NHL debut with Detroit in 1986 before moving on to St. Louis, Boston, Washington, Philadelphia, Anaheim, and finally Edmonton.

Notable snubs this year include Brendan Shanahan and Jeremy Roenick, both of whom are in their first year of eligibility. Shanahan in particular is a pretty egregious omission, as his resume includes three Stanley Cup rings with Detroit as well as 656 career goals, the 13th-most mark in history.

Four players who terrorized National Hockey League goaltenders over the last two decades are going into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
