The Charlotte Bobcats have reached an agreement to send Corey Maggette to the Detroit Pistons for shooting guard Ben Gordon and a 2013 first round pick that is protected through 2015 according Sam Amick of SI.com. For Detroit, the move is somewhat mystifying to say the least.

Even though Gordon is saddled with a bloated contract that will pay him $25.6 million over the next two seasons, the one position where the Pistons seem to have plethora of bodies is in the wing. Maggette, 32, joins Jonas Jerbeko, Tayshaun Prince (both of whom received significant contracts last season), Austin Daye, and as of now Jason Maxiell. Detroit is sorely in need in depth on the block, rebounding and scoring off the bench, and using their biggest trade chip to not address those needs is a luxury the Pistons front office doesn’t have.
Maggette finished the 2011-12 season with a PER of 14.1 and is still good at getting the line, but he has been injury prone, playing just 67 games in 2010, and just 32 last season. He was also rumored to be a potential amnesty victim if Charlotte was unable to move him prior to free agency. His expiring contract of $10.9m could be used as bait to try and lure another team into a deal, but as of now the only positive is that this move has little impact on what Detroit will do on draft. NBA insiders still believe that Joe Dumars and the Pistons will look to bolster their front line by adding either Ohio State's Jared Sullinger, or either UNC's John Henson or Tyler Zeller.
For the Bobcats, Rich Cho has added a scorer to pair next to fellow Huskie Kemba Walker in an effort to help an offense who finished last season dead last in the NBA in offensive efficiency (92.3). While Amick suggests that this move could be indicator that Charlotte might look to draft Kansas's Thomas Robinson or Kentucky's Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Bradley Beal is still a strong possibility at No. 2 as Charlotte needs players who can score even with Gordon on their roster.
