Any team with Steven Jackson at running back should be set. But for the first time in too long, the Rams have promising young depth behind the only NFL running back riding a seven-year run of 1,000-yard rushing seasons.

For the past seven years, Steven Jackson has played just two full seasons for the St. Louis Rams, yet has topped 1,000 yards every time, averaging just over 1,200 yards per season. In other words, St. Louis hasn’t had to worry about their number one running back position for the better part of the last decade. However, since he will be turning 29 next month, Jackson’s days as an every-down back are numbered, and frankly he has already eclipsed the normal shelf life of an NFL running back.
But not to worry, because St. Louis has quietly been accruing a strong stable of backups for the past two offseasons. They employed Cadillac Williams and Jerious Norwood last year, and while both are still under contract, Williams will almost certainly be let go before training camp, and Norwood’s roster spot is in jeopardy. That’s because of the selection of Cincinnati’s Isiah Pead in the second round of the 2012 Draft, someone that the Rams expect to eventually take over the full-time job. Pead will not wow anyone with his size, but he is quick and shifty out of the backfield and is also a dangerous pass-catching threat, making him an ideal third-down and change-of-pace back to complement Jackson in his first few years in the league.
